If you run a retail or hospitality business, nailing GST treatment of vouchers saves you from costly mistakes. Here’s what to check before the holidays.

GST Rules for Face Value vs Non‑Face Value Vouchers

GST treatment depends on the voucher type. The ATO splits them into two main categories:

Face value vouchers (FVV): Can be redeemed for a broad range of goods or services (e.g. a $50 store gift card).

Non-face value vouchers (NFVV): Are tied to specific goods or services (e.g. “one deluxe car wash” or “one massage”).

You must classify vouchers correctly, as this decides when GST kicks in.

Face value vouchers

  • No GST at the time of sale, if sold for no more than face value
  • GST applies when the customer redeems the voucher for taxable items
  • If sold above face value (e.g. $55 for a $50 card), GST applies to the excess immediately

Non-face value vouchers

  • GST applies at the time of sale, if the underlying supply is taxable
  • No GST if the voucher is for GST-free or input-taxed items (like certain health services)

Example: You sell a $100 voucher for a 3-course dinner. This is an NFVV, and because the dinner is taxable, you must include GST on that sale in the business activity statement (BAS).

The table outlines when to charge GST on sale or redemption, and how to handle GST on expired vouchers. Useful for businesses wondering how GST applies to gift vouchers and when to report GST in the BAS.

What Happens to GST on Unredeemed or Expired Vouchers?

If a FVV expires unused, you’ll likely need to adjust your GST.

  • When you write unredeemed voucher amounts back into income, report 1/11th as GST in your next BAS
  • Track voucher sales, redemptions, and expiry dates closely for accurate GST reporting

Australian Consumer Law sets a three-year minimum expiry for most gift cards. Ensure your POS tracks expiry dates so you don’t recognise income early.

ATO audits can pick up unreported adjustments, so don’t let unused vouchers fall through the cracks.

Can I Claim GST Credits on Voucher Purchases?

Yes, depending on the voucher type and when it’s used.

  • FVV: Claim the GST credit when you redeem the voucher and obtain an invoice
  • NFVV: Claim the GST credit in the BAS period when you buy it, as long as it’s used for business purposes

Buying staff gifts or promo rewards? Double-check the GST rules first.

Questions About How GST Works on Vouchers

Do I charge GST when selling gift vouchers?

Only for NFVVs.

FVVs don’t attract GST at the time of sale. For NFVVs, GST is charged upfront if the service/product is taxable.

FVV: report GST when the voucher is redeemed.

NFVV: report GST when sold (if taxable).

FVV: Usually no — unless the voucher is used for your own business’s goods or services and you can verify how it was spent.

NFVV: claim when purchased (if used for business and you have a tax invoice).
